I'm just wondering because I'm curious if anybody is using bitcoin to pay for things and if anybody is taking bitcoins in exchange. The volatility of bitcoin makes me very wary of whether it is feasible as a legitimate currency. Who is going to model their business on bitcoins when their value is unpredictable? Also who is going to spend their bitcoins on anything when they might inexplicably rocket in value? Granted, I know nothing about economics but this seems to be a bit of a scam market for commodity speculators to profit off of geeky hobbyists who are falling into a trap of "there are only going to be 21 million bitcoins and they might be worth something someday". I'm having flashbacks to TY beanie babies and feel like I'm going crazy. Someone explain it to me? "Commodities Speculators: These are traders who trade in the commodities markets for the sole purpose of profiting from the volatile price movements. Theses traders never intend to make or take delivery of the actual commodity when the futures contract expires. Many of the futures markets are very liquid and have a high degree of daily range and volatility, making them very tempting markets for intraday traders. Many of the index futures are used by brokerages and portfolio managers to offset risk. Also, since commodities do not typically trade in tandem with equity and bond markets, some commodities can also be used effectively to diversify an investment portfolio."

However, Bitcoin is one of those assets that does not quite fit well into any definition and a historical understanding of what is a currency and what is a commodity sheds light on the argument. Attorney Jared Marx discusses a recent ruling by the United States Commodities Futures Trading Commission, which saw it label bitcoin as a commodity. Electronic payment system Bitcoin is garnering praise, attention, and scrutiny in equal measure amidst claims the cryptocurrency could disrupt the entire global financial system. The future of Bitcoin has never looked so important to so many people, as countries in the grips of financial difficulties turn to Bitcoin, while those with an interest in stocks ... Bitcoin’s problem right now is that most people don’t understand what it is, and by calling it both currency and commodity you slow that understanding further. People know it can’t be both, so they doubt it can be either. Once people can see what Bitcoin truly is — how it will change trade and economics — that’s when the real explosion in adoption and usage will begin. And once ... Key Takeaways. By design, Bitcoin is a scarce digital asset more similar to a commodity than to a stock or a security.
