UPDATED - Groestlcoin Core 2.18.2
This is a major release of Groestlcoin Core with many protocol level improvements and code optimizations, featuring the technical equivalent of Bitcoin v0.18.2 but with Groestlcoin-specific patches. On a general level, most of what is new is a new 'Groestlcoin-wallet' tool which is now distributed alongside Groestlcoin Core's other executables. NOTE: The 'Account' API has been removed from this version which was typically used in some tip bots. Please ensure you check the release notes from 2.17.2 for details on replacing this functionality.

Calls to getblocktemplate will fail if the segwit rule is not specified. Calling getblocktemplate without segwit specified is almost certainly a misconfiguration since doing so results in lower rewards for the miner. Failed calls will produce an error message describing how to enable the segwit rule.
A warning is printed if an unrecognized section name is used in the configuration file. Recognized sections are [test], [main], and [regtest].
Four new options are available for configuring the maximum number of messages that ZMQ will queue in memory (the "high water mark") before dropping additional messages. The default value is 1,000, the same as was used for previous releases.
The rpcallowip option can no longer be used to automatically listen on all network interfaces. Instead, the rpcbind parameter must be used to specify the IP addresses to listen on. Listening for RPC commands over a public network connection is insecure and should be disabled, so a warning is now printed if a user selects such a configuration. If you need to expose RPC in order to use a tool like Docker, ensure you only bind RPC to your localhost, e.g. docker run [...] -p 127.0.0.1:1441:1441 (this is an extra :1441 over the normal Docker port specification).
The rpcpassword option now causes a startup error if the password set in the configuration file contains a hash character (#), as it's ambiguous whether the hash character is meant for the password or as a comment.
The whitelistforcerelay option is used to relay transactions from whitelisted peers even when not accepted to the mempool. This option now defaults to being off, so that changes in policy and disconnect/ban behavior will not cause a node that is whitelisting another to be dropped by peers.
A new short about the JSON-RPC interface describes cases where the results of anRPC might contain inconsistencies between data sourced from differentsubsystems, such as wallet state and mempool state.
A new document introduces Groestlcoin Core's BIP174 interface, which is used to allow multiple programs to collaboratively work to create, sign, and broadcast new transactions. This is useful for offline (cold storage) wallets, multisig wallets, coinjoin implementations, and many other cases where two or more programs need to interact to generate a complete transaction.
The output script descriptor (https://github.com/groestlcoin/groestlcoin/blob/mastedoc/descriptors.md) documentation has been updated with information about new features in this still-developing language for describing the output scripts that a wallet or other program wants to receive notifications for, such as which addresses it wants to know received payments. The language is currently used in multiple new and updated RPCs described in these release notes and is expected to be adapted to other RPCs and to the underlying wallet structure.
A new --disable-bip70 option may be passed to ./configure to prevent Groestlcoin-Qt from being built with support for the BIP70 payment protocol or from linking libssl. As the payment protocol has exposed Groestlcoin Core to libssl vulnerabilities in the past, builders who don't need BIP70 support are encouraged to use this option to reduce their exposure to future vulnerabilities.
The minimum required version of Qt (when building the GUI) has been increased from 5.2 to 5.5.1 (the depends system provides 5.9.7)
getnodeaddresses returns peer addresses known to this node. It may be used to find nodes to connect to without using a DNS seeder.
listwalletdir returns a list of wallets in the wallet directory (either the default wallet directory or the directory configured bythe -walletdir parameter).
getrpcinfo returns runtime details of the RPC server. Currently, it returns an array of the currently active commands and how long they've been running.
deriveaddresses returns one or more addresses corresponding to an output descriptor.
getdescriptorinfo accepts a descriptor and returns information aboutit, including its computed checksum.
joinpsbts merges multiple distinct PSBTs into a single PSBT. The multiple PSBTs must have different inputs. The resulting PSBT will contain every input and output from all the PSBTs. Any signatures provided in any of the PSBTs will be dropped.
analyzepsbt examines a PSBT and provides information about what the PSBT contains and the next steps that need to be taken in order to complete the transaction. For each input of a PSBT, analyze psbt provides information about what information is missing for that input, including whether a UTXO needs to be provided, what pubkeys still need to be provided, which scripts need to be provided, and what signatures are still needed. Every input will also list which role is needed to complete that input, and analyzepsbt will also list the next role in general needed to complete the PSBT. analyzepsbt will also provide the estimated fee rate and estimated virtual size of the completed transaction if it has enough information to do so.
utxoupdatepsbt searches the set of Unspent Transaction Outputs (UTXOs) to find the outputs being spent by the partial transaction. PSBTs need to have the UTXOs being spent to be provided because the signing algorithm requires information from the UTXO being spent. For segwit inputs, only the UTXO itself is necessary. For non-segwit outputs, the entire previous transaction is needed so that signers can be sure that they are signing the correct thing. Unfortunately, because the UTXO set only contains UTXOs and not full transactions, utxoupdatepsbt will only add the UTXO for segwit inputs.
getpeerinfo now returns an additional minfeefilter field set to the peer's BIP133 fee filter. You can use this to detect that you have peers that are willing to accept transactions below the default minimum relay fee.
The mempool RPCs, such as getrawmempool with verbose=true, now return an additional "bip125-replaceable" value indicating whether thetransaction (or its unconfirmed ancestors) opts-in to asking nodes and miners to replace it with a higher-feerate transaction spending any of the same inputs.
settxfee previously silently ignored attempts to set the fee below the allowed minimums. It now prints a warning. The special value of"0" may still be used to request the minimum value.
getaddressinfo now provides an ischange field indicating whether the wallet used the address in a change output.
importmulti has been updated to support P2WSH, P2WPKH, P2SH-P2WPKH, and P2SH-P2WSH. Requests for P2WSH and P2SH-P2WSH accept an additional witnessscript parameter.
importmulti now returns an additional warnings field for each request with an array of strings explaining when fields are being ignored or are inconsistent, if there are any.
getaddressinfo now returns an additional solvable Boolean field when Groestlcoin Core knows enough about the address's scriptPubKey, optional redeemScript, and optional witnessScript for the wallet to be able to generate an unsigned input spending funds sent to that address.
The getaddressinfo, listunspent, and scantxoutset RPCs now return an additional desc field that contains an output descriptor containing all key paths and signing information for the address (except for the private key). The desc field is only returned for getaddressinfo and listunspent when the address is solvable.
importprivkey will preserve previously-set labels for addresses or public keys corresponding to the private key being imported. For example, if you imported a watch-only address with the label "coldwallet" in earlier releases of Groestlcoin Core, subsequently importing the private key would default to resetting the address's label to the default empty-string label (""). In this release, the previous label of "cold wallet" will be retained. If you optionally specify any label besides the default when calling importprivkey, the new label will be applied to the address.
getmininginfo now omits currentblockweight and currentblocktx when a block was never assembled via RPC on this node.
The getrawtransaction RPC & REST endpoints no longer check the unspent UTXO set for a transaction. The remaining behaviors are as follows:
If a blockhash is provided, check the corresponding block.
If no blockhash is provided, check the mempool.
If no blockhash is provided but txindex is enabled, also check txindex.
unloadwallet is now synchronous, meaning it will not return until the wallet is fully unloaded.
importmulti now supports importing of addresses from descriptors. A desc parameter can be provided instead of the "scriptPubKey" in are quest, as well as an optional range for ranged descriptors to specify the start and end of the range to import. Descriptors with key origin information imported through importmulti will have their key origin information stored in the wallet for use with creating PSBTs.
listunspent has been modified so that it also returns witnessScript, the witness script in the case of a P2WSH orP2SH-P2WSH output.
createwallet now has an optional blank argument that can be used to create a blank wallet. Blank wallets do not have any keys or HDseed. They cannot be opened in software older than 2.18.2. Once a blank wallet has a HD seed set (by using sethdseed) or private keys, scripts, addresses, and other watch only things have been imported, the wallet is no longer blank and can be opened in 2.17.2. Encrypting a blank wallet will also set a HD seed for it.
signrawtransaction is removed after being deprecated and hidden behind a special configuration option in version 2.17.2.
The 'account' API is removed after being deprecated in v2.17.2 The 'label' API was introduced in v2.17.2 as a replacement for accounts. See the release notes from v2.17.2 for a full description of the changes from the 'account' API to the 'label' API.
addwitnessaddress is removed after being deprecated in version 2.16.0.
generate is deprecated and will be fully removed in a subsequent major version. This RPC is only used for testing, but its implementation reached across multiple subsystems (wallet and mining), so it is being deprecated to simplify the wallet-node interface. Projects that are using generate for testing purposes should transition to using the generatetoaddress RPC, which does not require or use the wallet component. Calling generatetoaddress with an address returned by the getnewaddress RPC gives the same functionality as the old generate RPC. To continue using generate in this version, restart groestlcoind with the -deprecatedrpc=generate configuration option.
Be reminded that parts of the validateaddress command have been deprecated and moved to getaddressinfo. The following deprecated fields have moved to getaddressinfo: ismine, iswatchonly,script, hex, pubkeys, sigsrequired, pubkey, embedded,iscompressed, label, timestamp, hdkeypath, hdmasterkeyid.
The addresses field has been removed from the validateaddressand getaddressinfo RPC methods. This field was confusing since it referred to public keys using their P2PKH address. Clients should use the embedded.address field for P2SH or P2WSH wrapped addresses, and pubkeys for inspecting multisig participants.
A new /rest/blockhashbyheight/ endpoint is added for fetching the hash of the block in the current best blockchain based on its height (how many blocks it is after the Genesis Block).
A new Window menu is added alongside the existing File, Settings, and Help menus. Several items from the other menus that opened new windows have been moved to this new Window menu.
In the Send tab, the checkbox for "pay only the required fee" has been removed. Instead, the user can simply decrease the value in the Custom Fee rate field all the way down to the node's configured minimumrelay fee.
In the Overview tab, the watch-only balance will be the only balance shown if the wallet was created using the createwallet RPC and thedisable_private_keys parameter was set to true.
The launch-on-startup option is no longer available on macOS if compiled with macosx min version greater than 10.11 (useCXXFLAGS="-mmacosx-version-min=10.11" CFLAGS="-mmacosx-version-min=10.11" for setting the deployment sdkversion)
A new groestlcoin-wallet tool is now distributed alongside Groestlcoin Core's other executables. Without needing to use any RPCs, this tool can currently create a new wallet file or display some basic information about an existing wallet, such as whether the wallet is encrypted, whether it uses an HD seed, how many transactions it contains, and how many address book entries it has.
Since version 2.16.0, Groestlcoin Core's built-in wallet has defaulted to generating P2SH-wrapped segwit addresses when users want to receive payments. These addresses are backwards compatible with all widely used software. Starting with Groestlcoin Core 2.20.1 (expected about a year after 2.18.2), Groestlcoin Core will default to native segwitaddresses (bech32) that provide additional fee savings and other benefits. Currently, many wallets and services already support sending to bech32 addresses, and if the Groestlcoin Core project sees enough additional adoption, it will instead default to bech32 receiving addresses in Groestlcoin Core 2.19.1. P2SH-wrapped segwit addresses will continue to be provided if the user requests them in the GUI or by RPC, and anyone who doesn't want the update will be able to configure their default address type. (Similarly, pioneering users who want to change their default now may set the addresstype=bech32 configuration option in any Groestlcoin Core release from 2.16.0 up.)
BIP 61 reject messages are now deprecated. Reject messages have no use case on the P2P network and are only logged for debugging by most network nodes. Furthermore, they increase bandwidth and can be harmful for privacy and security. It has been possible to disable BIP 61 messages since v2.17.2 with the -enablebip61=0 option. BIP 61 messages will be disabled by default in a future version, before being removed entirely.
The submitblock RPC previously returned the reason a rejected block was invalid the first time it processed that block but returned a generic "duplicate" rejection message on subsequent occasions it processed the same block. It now always returns the fundamental reason for rejecting an invalid block and only returns "duplicate" for valid blocks it has already accepted.
A new submitheader RPC allows submitting block headers independently from their block. This is likely only useful for testing.
The signrawtransactionwithkey and signrawtransactionwithwallet RPCs have been modified so that they also optionally accept a witnessScript, the witness script in the case of a P2WSH orP2SH-P2WSH output. This is compatible with the change to listunspent.
For the walletprocesspsbt and walletcreatefundedpsbt RPCs, if thebip32derivs parameter is set to true but the key metadata for a public key has not been updated yet, then that key will have a derivation path as if it were just an independent key (i.e. no derivation path and its master fingerprint is itself).
The -usehd configuration option was removed in version 2.16.0 From that version onwards, all new wallets created are hierarchical deterministic wallets. This release makes specifying -usehd an invalid configuration option.
This release allows peers that your node automatically disconnected for misbehaviour (e.g. sending invalid data) to reconnect to your node if you have unused incoming connection slots. If your slots fill up, a misbehaving node will be disconnected to make room for nodes without a history of problems (unless the misbehaving node helps your node in some other way, such as by connecting to a part of the Internet from which you don't have many other peers). Previously, Groestlcoin Core banned the IP addresses of misbehaving peers for a period (default of 1 day); this was easily circumvented by attackers with multiple IP addresses. If you manually ban a peer, such as by using the setban RPC, all connections from that peer will still be rejected.
The key metadata will need to be upgraded the first time that the HDseed is available. For unencrypted wallets this will occur on wallet loading. For encrypted wallets this will occur the first time the wallet is unlocked.
Newly encrypted wallets will no longer require restarting the software. Instead such wallets will be completely unloaded and reloaded to achieve the same effect.
A sub-project of Bitcoin Core now provides Hardware Wallet Interaction (HWI) scripts that allow command-line users to use several popular hardware key management devices with Groestlcoin Core. See their project page for details.
This release changes the Random Number Generator (RNG) used from OpenSSL to Groestlcoin Core's own implementation, although entropy gathered by Groestlcoin Core is fed out to OpenSSL and then read back in when the program needs strong randomness. This moves Groestlcoin Core a little closer to no longer needing to depend on OpenSSL, a dependency that has caused security issues in the past. The new implementation gathers entropy from multiple sources, including from hardware supporting the rdseed CPU instruction.
On macOS, Groestlcoin Core now opts out of application CPU throttling ("app nap") during initial blockchain download, when catching up from over 100 blocks behind the current chain tip, or when reindexing chain data. This helps prevent these operations from taking an excessively long time because the operating system is attempting to conserve power.

HODL GRS connects directly to the Groestlcoin network using SPV mode and doesn't rely on servers that can be hacked or disabled. HODL GRS utilizes AES hardware encryption, app sandboxing, and the latest security features to protect users from malware, browser security holes, and even physical theft. Private keys are stored only in the secure enclave of the user's phone, inaccessible to anyone other than the user. Simplicity and ease-of-use is the core design principle of HODL GRS. A simple recovery phrase (which we call a Backup Recovery Key) is all that is needed to restore the user's wallet if they ever lose or replace their device. HODL GRS is deterministic, which means the user's balance and transaction history can be recovered just from the backup recovery key.

Groestlcoin Seed Savior is a tool for recovering BIP39 seed phrases. This tool is meant to help users with recovering a slightly incorrect Groestlcoin mnemonic phrase (AKA backup or seed). Groestlcoin WPF is an alternative full node client with optional lightweight 'thin-client' mode based on WPF. Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) is one of Microsoft's latest approaches to a GUI framework, used with the .NET framework. Import from bootstrap.dat - It is a flat, binary file containing Groestlcoin blockchain data, from the genesis block through a recent height. Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server aims to make using Electrum Groestlcoin wallet more secure and more private. It makes it easy to connect your Electrum-GRS wallet to your own full node. It is an implementation of the Electrum-grs server protocol which fulfils the specific need of using the Electrum-grs wallet backed by a full node, but without the heavyweight server backend, for a single user. It allows the user to benefit from all Groestlcoin Core's resource-saving features like pruning, blocks only and disabled txindex. All Electrum-GRS's feature-richness like hardware wallet integration, multi-signature wallets, offline signing, seed recovery phrases, coin control and so on can still be used, but connected only to the user's own full node. Full node wallets are important in Groestlcoin because they are a big part of what makes the system be trust-less. No longer do people have to trust a financial institution like a bank or PayPal, they can run software on their own computers. If Groestlcoin is digital gold, then a full node wallet is your own personal goldsmith who checks for you that received payments are genuine. Full node wallets are also important for privacy. Using Electrum-GRS under default configuration requires it to send (hashes of) all your Groestlcoin addresses to some server. That server can then easily spy on your transactions. Full node wallets like Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server would download the entire blockchain and scan it for the user's own addresses, and therefore don't reveal to anyone else which Groestlcoin addresses they are interested in. Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server can also broadcast transactions through Tor which improves privacy by resisting traffic analysis for broadcasted transactions which can link the IP address of the user to the transaction. If enabled this would happen transparently whenever the user simply clicks "Send" on a transaction in Electrum-grs wallet. Note: Currently Groestlcoin Electrum Personal Server can only accept one connection at a time.

Groestlcoin Sentinel is a great solution for anyone who wants the convenience and utility of a hot wallet for receiving payments directly into their cold storage (or hardware wallets). Sentinel accepts XPUB's, YPUB'S, ZPUB's and individual Groestlcoin address. Once added you will be able to view balances, view transactions, and (in the case of XPUB's, YPUB's and ZPUB's) deterministically generate addresses for that wallet. Groestlcoin Sentinel is a fork of Groestlcoin Samourai Wallet with all spending and transaction building code removed.
Hi, I run Bisq 1.1.7 (and before it's predecessor with the same problem) on my linux box, and I have problems connecting to my local bitcoind. Understanding BIP149, redeployment of Segwit with BIP8
I recently published BIP149 and would like to take a few moments to explain the details of this proposal. BIP149 is a completely new deployment of segwit, which I propose if the current BIP9/BIP141/143/147 segwit deployment fails to lockin/activate by November 15th. BIP149 cannot be run on mainnet now, and there is code in the reference implementation to prevent it from running. It is incompatible with the current segwit deployment on purpose to remove unnecessary complications. Essentially, the idea is, if the current segwit deployment fails to activate by Nov 15th, we can release new software that has BIP149. This uses BIP8 to activate segwit by July 2018. Miners will still be able to trigger activation by 95% threshold signalling as normal. In the 8 months from November to July 2018, nodes will be able to upgrade to BIP149. If segwit is not MASF activated by July 2018, there will be enough of the economy running BIP149 that nodes can begin enforcement. What will actually happen is on the first retarget after July 4th, the BIP8 state machine will switch to LOCKED_IN status for two weeks, and then on the following retarget, ACTIVATION will occur. The rationale here is in 5 months we achieved 70% saturation of witness capable nodes, so by the time segwit timesout with all the urgency and demand people feel for segwit, we can expect them to upgrade at least as fast, if not much faster. I have spoken with a number of developers who think this is a reasonable assumption. Background, I had hoped to be able to release a BIP that can be deployed concurrently now with segwit, but, there are various technical complications in implementing it cleanly and making it easily reviewable. I had various feedback from others in previous iterations and in order to get the widest support from developers especially concerned with predictable results and thus safety, I came to the conclusion that the BIP will get the widest support by not attempting any shortcuts and by removing all complexity. I know many people want segwit now, but, I think we should just bite the bullet and do it the BIP149 way. I already made a shortcut BIP with BIP148. I will discuss the pros and cons at the end. Back to BIP149, this is a completely new redeployment with a new service bit NODE_UAWITNESS and new compact block protocol version - doing this avoids many gotchyas which I will explain below: Currently, segwit capable nodes advertize the NODE_WITNESS service bit and preferentially peer with other NODE_WITNESS nodes. Post activation, segwit-active nodes will then know who they should relay witness blocks to and who they should relay old style stripped blocks to. The assumption is if I am a NODE_WITNESS node and segwit has activated, then other NODE_WITNESS nodes will also be segwit activated. We cannot reuse NODE_WITNESS because when BIP149 activates, they would believe non-BIP149 NODE_WITNESS nodes were also active. Using a new service bit, and effectively starting a new deployment as if the previous deployment doesnt exist, is the most predictable and trouble free way to go about it. Additionally, BIP149 is compatible with existing mining software by reusing the "segwit" name and deployment chainparams (it's not possible to have two deployments with the same name, one expired and one pending/active, due to how versionbits is implemented). In short, if the current segwit deployment fails to activate, we can reuse parts to maintain compatibility, while changing the bare minimum to remove any conflicts with old nodes. It's clean, predictable and easy to review. BIP148 IS NOT BIP149 Remember BIP148 is exceptional, it's NOT what a usual UASF BIP should look like. A normal UASF if effectively activation on a predetermined date in the future (a flag day). BIP8 combines BIP9 miner signalling with a flagday if MASF does not occur. How is BIP149 different to BIP148? So BIP148 is a UASF which can be used in two ways. (a) The economy can run BIP148 and basically force miners to signal for segwit, thus activating the current segwit deployment. Or, (b) a majority of miners, 60% or so, could run it and censor other miners who do not signal segwit, thus causing the current segwit to deploy. In method (a) a chain split will occur if any miners do not upgrade, and given the fact there are always absentee miners and pool operators, this is quite likely. It's the economy vs hash power saying "if you dont signal, your blocks will not be worth anything because we will reject them". In the case of (b) you have a majority of hashpower, who could use their majority to orphan any non signalling miners. This isn't great but it's less disruptive than (a) because there is a majority hashpower definitely opted in. BIP149 on the other had does not guarantee a chain split since that could only happen if a miner deliberately takes action to manually create a segwit invalid block, which would be rejected by the economy. The incentives are different also, with BIP148 a chainsplit comes for free, regardless of if it lasts long or not. In BIP149, a miner would have to specifically take action to split and waste their money, which they could do at any time anyway. BIP149 is uncontroversial in the sense it is just a redeployment with guaranteed activation at the end, for a soft fork we are fairly sure people want and will upgrade to. The evidence is everywhere. UASFs deployed over a long time and a decent flagday are perfectly safe - all soft forks are enforced by nodes, even if activation is triggered by hashpower. Anyway, we've got 8 months from now to review and think about BIP149 - it cannot be deployed until November. The Historical Importance of Litecoin Implementing SegWit on 5/10
I thought I'd write up a brief post on why 5/10 is a big day for Litecoin as a way to reflect and in case you're new. A lot of this is going to briefly cover Bitcoin's history (hopefully somewhat objectively), but there's a reason for that as it will show you the role Litecoin played and the continued role it could continue to play in the future. --------------------- Today marks the day when Litecoin successfully activated SegWit. This was an important moment for both the Bitcoin and Litecoin communities. In the beginning of 2017, there were 3 main topics of contention in the bitcoin community:
There were rumblings of covert ASIC BOOST mining on the Bitcoin network.
There was also talk about the need for a transaction malleability fix for transaction id's, particularly because this would be needed if 2nd layer solutions like the Lightning Network ever were to transpire. As a side note, transaction malleability is just fancy way of saying that there was more than 1 way to create a tx id. Even though, LTC would be sent to the correct address, accounting was difficult because there could be multiple tx id's for the same transaction which created conflicting pieces of information.
Bitcoin's blocks were getting full and so there were talks of increasing the blocksize to process more transactions.
Segwit: The Possible Solution
Segwit was first proposed by Pieter Wiulle in 2015 in order to address the problem of malleability. Later on, a positive side-effect to SegWit that was discovered was that it could naturally increase the blocksize to just under 4 mb. However, there was much resistance in the Bitcoin community to hardfork in order to implement this protocol. That's when Luke-jr proposed a soft fork i.e. some nodes are SegWit and others are not. This is why you can currently broadcast to both legacy and segwit transactions from the same wallet. However in order to achieve this, no true segwit addresses were utilized (hence the current need for Bech32 SegWit addresses). Instead, SegWit transactions are nested into a script (a.k.a a smart contract) called a "Pay 2 Script Hash". If you want to learn more, I highly recommend Mastering Bitcoin Chapter 7 by Andreas. By soft forking, the hope was that SegWit could:
Make covert ASIC BOOST mining negligible if not useless.
Fix Transaction Malleability to set the path towards the Lightning Network.
Increase the blocksize to a hypothetical 4 mb block (2mb average) "weight" as a temporary stop-gap.
However, the method of implementing a SegWit soft-fork through P2SH had never been done before and FUD started circulating around this topic. Some claimed that there was a problem of "anyone could spend" the script that was used to lock up the SegWit transactions. Since there was so much in-fighting between implementing a SegWit softfork and simply just increasing blocksizes in lieu of SegWit, the Bitcoin community was stuck. They then attempted to settle this debate through miner signaling. This meant miner's would run the client software they supported which would then be recorded in the block that they successfully submit. Turns out the miners responsible for extending the majority of Bitcoin's blockchain wanted a simple blocksize increase instead of SegWit. This then created another wave of debate as the discussion shifted towards how to exactly determine "consensus." Then bitcoin clients were released that allowed non-mining nodes to "signal" in support of SegWit or a Blocksize increase. This revealed that many users actually believed in SegWit, contrary to what the miners wanted (although even here there is some debate as to the authenticity of these nodes as they can be spoofed). It is from this movement that the phrase "User Activated Soft Fork" (UASF) was born.
How Does Litecoin Fit into All of This?
In the beginning of 2017, Charlie wrote up an article outlining his vision for Litecoin, SegWit, and the Lightning Network. He (along with the Litecoin core team) then worked hard to convince and gain consensus among miners to implement segwit. In fact, they even hosted a "Litecoin Roundtable". It was out of this agreement that the Litecoin dev team could confidently move forward with soft-forking SegWit onto Litecoin which officially occurred on 5/10/17. With the success of the soft fork, it showed that it wasn't difficult to implement and that it wouldn't disrupt the network. Even though Bitcoin developers could have tested the implementation on testnet, nothing beats a live main net version to "test" on. Oh, and Litecoin implementing Segwit also proved that the "anyone can spend" FUD was...well just FUD.
The $1 MM SegWit Bounty
A random redditor (u/throwaway40338210716) created a throwaway account and posted a $1 MM Bounty for anyone who could "steal" the LTC from the P2SH address. This person even provided the raw hex tx for miners to try and steal the funds from:
Though many Bitcoin maximalists may not admit this, Litecoin was an important part in helping implement SegWit onto Bitcoin:
Litecoin proved it was safe to do so on main net.
The $1 MM Bounty proved P2SH transactions were safe disproved the "anyone can spend" FUD.
In the end, there were many reasons as to why Bitcoin ultimately implemented SegWit...one of it being the SegWit2X NYA agreement. However it is undeniable that Litecoin played its part in squashing the FUD surrounding SegWit thereby removing some of the huge roadblocks Bitcoin faced during these debates. In light of all this, we now can look forward to an exciting future of layer 2 scaling solutions through the Lightning Network. Suffice it to say, there are many mutual benefits to Litecoin being the silver to Bitcoin's gold (an analogy that highlights the close relationship Litecoin's codebase has to Bitcoin's), two of which we've seen this year alone:
It allows us to be a testbed for Bitcoin. Nothing beats main net implementation with billions of dollars on the line.
It allows BTC protocols and clients to be easily ported onto LTC. This is evidenced by SegWit as well as how the lnd client has both BTC and LTC support.
It offers a secure enough network for those who are building on top of BTC to port their businesses onto LTC for cheaper transactions. This was ultimately why Abra decided to add Litecoin as an underlying asset to its exchange.
Anyways, I hope this was helpful to you all and provided some context to the historical significance behind 5/10 and Litecoin activating SegWit. In many ways, this was the date that Litecoin undeniably proved its worth to both the bitcoin and the cryptocommunity as a whole. I will add UASF to my twitter handle as a way to commemorate it. I've been playing around with LND for a while. Back in January I was probably one of the first few thousand people to use LN to buy a shirt and some stickers on blockstream. Since then I've downloaded bitcoin core on my windows PC and used Eclair occasionally on satoshis. place. I've recently set up a Bitcoin/LN node on a raspberry pi and have been messing around with 1 Satoshi payments here and there. Throughout all this, the awesomeness of it all hadn't hit me until today. I set up a thin client on my phone to connect with my node while I'm away (via port forwarding) and while I was picking up groceries (4 items that cost me about 40 bucks as it were) I withdrew a one Satoshi balance from zapread.com. I stood in the grocery line with a shit eating grin on my face not recognizing that the cashier was telling me to cough up my $40. As I inserted my card I realized that the act of receiving a single Satoshi was way more valuable than me purchasing my groceries (except for my my Mongo double IPAs, obviously).

These intentional FUD attacks were a quick way for whales (the people who own news agencies) to scoop up cheap shares leading into the biggest 7-12 weeks in blockchain conference history. The sheer amount of publicity surrounding a conference every weekend will drive the total market cap above 1 trillion (in my opinion). I haven’t even started talking about February but we will leave that for another time. The market will trend North as the conferences approach setting new ATHs in the next very short period of time. I cannot predict the future (or specifically which day this will occur) but what I do know is people do not pay $1000 (per ticket!) to sit at a convention unless they are truly big investors looking to get involved. There should be a flood of money coming into the crypto space following each conference between the attendees and the publicity. Do not try to pick which coin will go up 500%, pick 5 of the 10 moonshots you believe in and have researched and invest evenly. My moonshot for today… CAG. Moonshot Pick: CAG (Change Bank) The name speaks for itself, Change Bank, they intend to be the first truly decentralized crypto bank. CAG has a market cap of approximately $50million which makes it one of the lowest market cap coins on KuCoin. As the altcoins begin to pick up steam again and as new traders flood to exchanges like KuCoin, those with the smallest market caps and cheapest shares will be flooded with new $$. From a technical standpoint the chart shows a solid sell wall at 10040 Satoshis while the price was at 8700 Satoshis this morning when I recommended it on Discord and is currently around 9100 Satoshis. This leaves room for a 12% rise in value solely based on Sell Wall technical analysis. There is much more to CAG then analyzing the charts. It was trading 50% higher less than 48hrs prior (lovely correction the market had), making the coin currently ‘on sale.’ With no negative news besides poor market conditions CAG did not deserve a 50% drop in coin value. I expect CAG to quickly approach its prior ATH a minimum of a 50% gain once the market corrects in the coming days. It would not surprise me if even in these red days we get the 12% gain reaching the 10040 Satoshi sell wall (possibly today). I do not recommend day trading moonshots but this may be a nice way to pull a 12% profit without worrying about CAG long term. I am in CAG for the long haul as I see a minimum of 50% growth opportunity in the next week with the possibility of this being a 5-10xer once the market corrects and a new exchange is chosen. From a technical analysis CAG looks ripe for an immediate trend North. Analyzing their actual concept, team, wallet, roadmap and Q1, it is even more impressive. Their Q1 road map coupled with their wallet make this a coin that should be well above the $100million market cap as any of its competitors already are. This coin is on sale for no other reason than the market FUD attacks which will correct very shortly. A strong team, a great roadmap, a concept built for the future of crypto banking, and a technical analysis that shows a major correction are why CAG is the Moonshot of the Day! Solely because CAG is the Moonshot of the Day does not mean 100% of your funds should be in it. I hold all moonshots, never selling an entire stake as that will be the time your coin does a 40x. I rotate profits around often to the most underperforming coins from the ones that are outperforming. This takes monitoring but with a low cost of transacting can allow you to extrapolate many little gains throughout the day. HST, DBC, ELIX, SNOV, BNTY, KCS, DRGN, PURA, and EVX were my prior moonshot picks! Most are up between 100% and 600% depending on where you bought them. If you do not believe me click my name and go back 10 days in my posts, you will see I called DRGN when it was $.7 and KCS when it was $3.00, while KCS is now $19 and DRGN is over $4. Moonshots are not going to moon while the market is bleeding. We all need to be patient, with a strong set of cojones, to allow the moons the required time to take off. I feel the same losses all of you feel, I am just accustomed to them because when these FUD attacks occur, 2 weeks later your portfolio will be at its ATH (all time high). This has happened many times in 2017, especially from November-January. HOLD STRONG KINGDOM, HOLD (I have faith in you all!). January can be approached in 2 ways, roll with the most undervalued coins I’ve selected based on upcoming news and conferences or choose coins with upcoming news attending conferences that you prefer over the ones I’ve selected. NEO has more conferences than any other coin in the next 2 weeks and meet ups all over Europe prior to that. NEO is the Asian Ether and should rapidly increase in value in the next 3 weeks. STRAT will remain a favorite of mine as they are launching their ICO Platform and have 2 flagship ICOs ready to be announced (they are timing the down market waiting for a correction, I guarantee it). The FUD started in South Korea and ICX crashed because of it. They still have their first HOSTED blockchain event during their mainnet release the last week of January in the tallest building in Seoul. All 3 make up a major portion of my “safe plays” for January with an expected return of 40-100%. My 3 favorite short term conference plays based on conferences for the next 2 weeks are: WAVES, ARK, and SONM. These 3 are all at events in the next 2 weeks of January (Waves and ARK are at a conference in Miami I will be attending!). The cost of attendance to these conferences start at $1,000 (help, donors help !) However, they provide exposure to the top individuals and founders of coins with billions of dollars in market cap. In comparison to other coins speaking at the largest January events WAVES, ARK, and SONM’s price has not appreciated this week in correlation to the others. They are also the smallest market cap coins presenting at these huge conferences. This provides an opportunity to purchase WAVES, ARK, and SONM at an undervalued price. As their conferences in mid-January approach I expect their price to trend north rapidly, peaking on the day of, or day after the conference. These should be focal points if you shy away from moonshots (which you shouldn’t!). XEM, I’ve discussed this one many times. Their NEM 2.0 release, their Catapult Network, and a 4-week hack-a-thon with plenty of publicity beginning this week, make XEM a winner for January. TRX, FUD attacks mean new ATHs remember that. TRX suffered bad attacks this week and with a game on the horizon I expect the new ATH to be approached ferociously. POWR, Very few coins are sponsored or have the support of their native country. Australia has some of the worst laws for investing in crypto (problems with deposits and withdrawals) when compared to any country. Yet the Aussies LOVE crypto (as do I!!!). POWR has the Australian govt. support likely due to the power issues plaguing Australia. POWR is a great long term play. ADX, A port to NEO is happening very soon and they also have a profitable advertising platform already set up. They recently completed a deal with EasyJet in the millions of dollars and are continuing to expand their user base. Advertising on the blockchain with a new port to NEO, seems like this is a clear winner with that type of news on the horizon. ENJ, A new listing on KuCoin and a new wallet release? Not to mention their Minecraft Plugin is coming out very very soon…What more needs to be said about ENJ. They were one of the few winners in the market recently and should continue to be green even in a sea of red. ARDR, Still a great buy because of its network but Bittrex is frustrating me to no end. My NXT has yet to arrive and my ARDR wallet has yet to be opened back up. Bittrex stop being so annoying this is why people are switching to KuCoin and Binance! BINANCE: A DRIVER FOR BLOCKCHAIN AND CRYPTO-CURRENCY ADOPTION
Introduction Binance is an exchange company formed in 2017. If one may ask, is Binance just an exchange or a progressive crypto exchange? My answer is that Binance is not just a crypto exchange company but an 'engine' that drives crypto-currency adoption. How? My readers may ask. My answers will first start with a simple analogy of what is adoption.
Adoption is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting of another, (usually a child, from that person's biological or legal parent or parents,) and in so doing, permanently transfers all rights and responsibilities, along with filiation, from the biological parent or parents (Wikipedia,2018). In the sense of crypto-currency it is a process whereby a person assumes the parenting of another ( new idea or way or thing) and in so doing permanently transfers all rights and responsibility that belong to the old or normal way to the new way. Driving in the other hand is knowing how to operate the mechanisms which control the system (vehicle); it requires knowing how to apply the rules of the road (which ensures safe and efficient sharing with other users). An effective driver also has an intuitive understanding of the basics of system (vehicle ) handling and can drive responsibly (Jacob,2018). A driver may be a person, company, a system or device that knows the mechanism which control a system and the driver must formulate or know the rules and the basics of directing the system to its target. A device driver for instance is a system (computer program) that operates or controls a particular type of device (EMC,2010). In our case we are looking at crypto-adoption driver, a person or company that knows the mechanism which can be used to make greater number of people to transfer permanently the rights and responsibility of fiat money to blockchain currency (Crypto-currency). A clear case of driving adoption can be easily seen in Football which have been in existence long ago, but FIFA devices a way to entice all nation to participate and develop football infrastructure in there countries by moving Football tournament hosting around different regions and other things they did to make the sports to be popular (adopted) all over the regions of the world. Similarly, crypto-currency have been there before Binance started, crypto-exchanges have been there before the advent of Binance but what Binance did and what they did not do helped in replicating adoption across all the regions of the globe. The only challenge here is whether these position can be substantiated?
The Authors experience My name is Bartholomew Eke (PhD), a Software Engineer and Senior Lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, Africa. I developed interest on cryptocurrency in 2010 after reading Nakamoto published paper Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer electronic cash system (Satoshi,2008) which I saw as a research on cryptography protection of online payments. I didn't well understood it until on Febuary 2014 on hearing that Mt. Gox the largest Bitcoin exchange tend, had gone bankcrupt and had made away with depositors 'Coins'. The word coins attracted my interest, I wondererd why they should be keeping the Coins instead of the notes, but I latter learnt it was not Coins but Bitcoins. Before that time Satoshis's Bitcoin was simply viewed by me as a research exercise aimed at improving crryptography which I had many programs on. The research on tracking of Mt. Gox Bitcoin in the publication of Sarah et. al (2016) increased my interest in Crypto-currency and exchanges research. The research is still ungoing though I have published some of my findings but one of my crushial discovery is that Binance is not just a cryptocurrency exchange but a driver of cryptocurrency and blockchain adoption. I am one of the few people trading in crypto exchanges as part of my research project so it often does not matter whether I gained a trade or lost provided I made my findings. I have used more than 15 exchanges only on experimental bases some of which include Coinbase, Blockchain, Kraken, Bitrrex, Tradesatoshi, Binance, Kucoin, Bit-Z, Cryptopia, Luno, Abucoin and Cryptagio just to mention a few. My criteria of registering include Low volume, High Volume, Low fee, High Fee, difficulty of registration, exchange incentive, exchange policy, cardinal goal of exchange, Fiat or non-fiat, age of exchange and other criteria which I will still publish in my future paper. I have lost and gained crypto in the process of the research but I saw some things that Binance does differently which may or may not have contributed to surge in users interest.
Binance Key Drivers In discussing the story of a young exchange called Binance there are some findings worth mentioning and they include: i) Segregation (Discrimination) : In all the money transfer companies and exchanges I have studied before the advent of Binance there is serious segregation among its customers. In some exchanges this differentiation is very scaring but in Binance it is very minimal, unnoticeable and almost non existent. I will use three experiences to explain, in Coinbase my country (Nigeria) can not trade but they can deposit and withdraw crypto, so why allow them to register only to segregate. Most exchanges, majority of users do not withraw more than 1BTC per day but exchanges group them into three level of users which have different withdrawal limits ( which is very OK for some reasons) but many exchanges go further to place trade restrictions based on this segregations. For instance Cryptopia do not allow you to trade USDT or its equivalent if you are not in certain levels. Bit-z will not allow you to participate in some trading competition or even get airdrops if you are not in some category of user. There are more instances but you will not experience any difference as a user until you want to withdraw above certain limits in Binance. Binance operates little or no discrimination allowing 'Private Crypto' users to remain in level 1 and operate freely provided they withraw smaller amounts. There are many world micro scale and unbanked users who can not afford to get any valid government ID for level 3 registration- Binance is were they fill welcomed. I spent some months as level 1 client and now am in level 2 but my withrawal is hardly upto one BTC a day so I feel no difference but that's not true with many exchanges. ii) Incentives: The unprecidented incentives that Binance offer can make some body with zero dollar to be a marchant with Binance. In November 2017, I told my research students who do not have funds to complete their research work, to register in Binance and generate money to finish their research; they did and are about to graduate. Binance empowered them, they simply registered, got some Airdrops from some new crypto companies, sold and traded with the money and where given trading bonuses and they sold the coins and paid for there research costs via Binance. Their trading incentive vary so much that all kinds of traders benefit, to be more concrete Ontology had a condition of trading 0.5BTC over a week. Using $100 a trader can easily trade five times a day which is $1000 buy-sell volume, in five days that is $5000 volume above 0.5BTC at that time and they gave 1000 ONT which was worth (at some time) $10000, what else is incentive or empowerment. No one can deny these facts. Some new exchanges have copied these model which is great for cryptocurrency adoption. All young school leavers in my area are into Airdrop due to this model introduced by Binance. iii) Low trading Fee : Binance is a cryptocurrency which is accepted for transaction in my local domain thanks to the exchange, for the past six months IT training centers in my locality accept and use Binance as payment for IT training. Trading fee is half when the coin is used to pay for fees but due to its relative stability Binance have found usage in other payments. Beginners can easily learn trading at reduced cost due to low fees. Majority of crypto traders in Binance are startup traders who are learning fast due to trading incentives. iv) High Volume: One of the Support team in Abucoin said that people go to Binance because of there high trading volumes, many people still have the same opinion. But as an academics I know that at a time Binance traded less than 1BTC during their starting stage either as one second or one minute trade volume, they did not start the first second of opening trade with large volumes. BTC only have less than 40% of all Crypto (Coinmarketcap,2018) and Binance introduce good altcoins which was followed by volumes. I was told when Binance started by a forum friend that an exchange that does not offer fiat currency will not attract traders but I differed, insisting that a trader will always prefer to make money in 'Aghanistan and spend it in Paris'. If a trader can ingage in quality trade in an exchange he will only go to the next exchange for cash-out. Cashing out is not always a problem once there is another exchange that is ready to exchange even a single crypto like Bitcoin or even TUSD or USDT. v) Honesty: Binance is an honest exchange, they promise they will distribute prices for trade in a given time you will get it before the time or right at the time they promised. Some exchanges do not add crypto handling delays when they make promise only to discover that a transfer may take 30 seconds today and 3 days the next hour. Binance will tell you two weeks after trading competition the coins will be distributed, they do not usually mean it. What they actually said is that "in two days time after context we will send the winners there coins and the coins can take at most 10 days to reach". In most cases the coins reach in seconds instead of the added days they promised. Cryptocurrency is scary and new users are afraid of dealing with faceless customer service personnels, emails and text messages. What they always want is "your coin is confirming 1/30 confirmations"; they can go to sleep believing that in 5days the coin will be their own. Binance delivers on promises. When they found abnormality that will make customers loss they will raise alarm. For instance during Bytecoin surden price spike in early May 2018 they warned customers to trade with cursion explaining that coin deposit problem may have caused price abnormality-honesty. They constantly remind you to trade with their Binance coin for low fee even when they know that your failure to do that results to higher fees and more gain to the company but they prefer to honestly warn customers. v) Selection of Promising Alt Coins: I am a lecturer in Africa and have never worked with any crypto company but I have traded more than 15 coins in Binance (the evidence is the piece of coin left) but the coins are promising. The coin that is usually at the bottom of the Binance volume is Via Coin which is still a good coin (from my accessment). Most of the coins listed in the exchange easily move up creating great choice and selection space for traders. When crypto exchange grow, users grow and trading space need to grow, Binance is master in that strategy. If a company produces a fake coin or even a 'good coin' with bad road map they will not even approach Binance for listing for two reasons- fear of not spending their money since they do not have plans to make more money from long term plan, fear that there listing request will be rejected. The choice of coins cut across prices and different rating in Coinmarketcap; Binance does not wait for a coin to be in the first 100 before listing them rather if they believe the coin is promising they select the coin. vi) Recognition of developer community Any IT company today that do not take care of its developers or technical teams well will loose them to other cryptocurrency companies and there are many of them coming up. Exchanges seem to believe that there job is to deal on other peoples products but Binance has shown that the best we to understand the crypto world is by been one with it. Binance is not just an exchange, it is a cryptocurrency, a blockchain technology and security and software development organization. This is correct but that can not be said of many exchanges except those copying Binance model. Surprisingly those exchanges copying Binance are also getting visible result. vii) Efficiency and Speed of Site and Trading App. There are things that the Western countries take for granted- power availability and very high speed internet connectivity. Readers of this story from advanced nations should jump to the next point. But the rest of the world have little power which is not even available always and internet cost are high and speed are extremely low. Even when the provider have technology to provide high speed users prefer to have their data last for one full month than to see it finished due to high speed usage. Some times provider intentionally slow down speed to avoid customers outcry of quick finishing data. This calls for exchanges to carry majority of users along in developing there trading platforms. The faster the better and Binance is acting and continues to work on this. viii) Security This is closely related to technology since internally trading apps needed to be upgraded to remain ahead of hackers, crakers and phishing organisations. Early in the year 2018 Binance had a phishing attack, we could easily imagine the state of the cryptocurrency exchange now is they had suceeded. But the phishers could not still coins even when they have broken in, this increased users confidence in the exchange and draw more new clients. The new features added to the exchange have even made email phishing extremely difficult to phishers. There are other security features added which users can sence but are hidden to public discussion. ix) Rich Binance is a rich company, rich in their attitude to the world community, rich in income generation, rich in the way they give to start up companies even when they are also start up themselves, rich in their logo and rich in communicating with customers. Rich in innovative ideas. Binance is rich. Poverty repels, so Binance will keep attracting every body to itself. x) Binance is blessed with an experienced and humble CEO When a company has an experienced leader the multiplier effect is seeing on the rest of the staff. Innovative staff will have little headache in getting their ideas approved. An arrogant leader is a liability to a company and make the company to keep regreting its actions. The leader is planning to go to Malta but he is still insisting that it is just a branch of Binance making the current host the consider its stands on tough regulation.
Binance Road Pot Holes A driver must be careful about pot holes else his good car may tumble. Binance no dought now is really a cryptocurrency innovation adoption driver and must watch out for the following. i) Rise of Communities around cryptos Communities grow a company and communities make companies to go down. If all traders pull out from Binance the company will be history. When Bitcoin started, there was one cryptocurrency community, one group of Bitcoin developers, one Bitcoin enthusiast, but today that is far from the reality. We now have many Bitcoin communities (BTC, BCH, BTCP, BTG etc) and many altcoin communities. Passion have started to roll in these communities and support is continously solicited and soon tougher competitions will ensure the coin to list need to be voted for and a new way for paying for coin listing should be deviced using Binance Coin to vote. ii) Ico Support Binance supports ICOs but for more than three months there LaunchPad on their website have being showing Bread and Gifto, this is very bad. When not launching a coin the LaunchPad need to be empty and when new coin are not coming to the Binance LaunchPad the LaunchPad should go to new coins. Binance community can vote to select the next coin that will go into the LaunchPad. If it required payment then they can use their binance coin to vote and get rewarded by the new coin in a form of shared bounty or airdrop. iii) Strong Community We have discussed the rise of communities, binance is lacking on strong community (a group that have strong passion for Binance as an Exchange, a Cryptocurrency and as a Technology). A community driven by volunteers and not by Binance employee, a community that will work for the passion and not for duty. I see three Binance and the group must be very passionate about the three. This may not be group of Binance Traders - no they are too busy and have no coin or exchange friend. Binance may be working towards this direction in the Binance Angels project but wisdom must be used to get the correct arrow head of the community and to actually let go of the person to freely handle the community. If the staff want to lord it on the community followership will be for duty not for the passion. iv) Binance Bounties Binance have so many trading bounties won after the competitions. This is good but part of this bounties need to be used to bring in more new users who will register and a buy Binance and smaller amount for new members without any conditions. The trade competitions the way most of them are ends up in the hands of already suceessful members who can trade once a day and win the competition due to there financial musle. These group of big traders are highly desirable and will continue to remain in the first to third places. But future members need to be attracted with the little tokens falling out from every bounty. v) Need for Binance_Inc Exchange Binance is so big and will get bigger. Binance need to have another cryptocurrency exchange, but instead of just an exchange Binance should have an incubator exchange. 'Division Two exchange' this exchange will be low volume and should serve as a source for listing in the main exchange. If a coin is performing with high volume it can be moved to the main exchange. In a crypto in the main exchange is not performing in they can be moved back to the incubator exchange. In this way Binance will remain the technology and develop in other areas.
Binance as an Innovative Crypto-currency Adoption Driver It has been said that adoption is the original dependent variable in innovation research and the desirable property of innovative systems which change agents seek to enhance. "Innovation" on the other hand is any change in structure, design, products, or processes in which there is a definable new element introduced into the system; the process is essentially the same for all technologies including blockchain technologies. In innovative space the characteristics of people or organizations are associated with higher levels of adoption and the company that makes the adoption to happen faster is very innovative. The voiced or unvoiced assumption underlying the examination of correlates of innovativeness is causal: If we manipulate the characteristics of organizations or individuals so that they more closely resemble those of the highly innovative, we will make the organizations or individuals themselves more innovative (Eveland, 1979)
Conclusion It is very easy to conclude this article by saying that since Binance was able to make more people to adopt cryptocurrency in a fast manner that they are not only drivers of cryptocurrency adoption but they are Innovative. A simple guide to financial sovereignty (set up your Bitcoin fullnode)
In 2009, a 9 pages white paper by satoshi Nakamoto described a protocol that made central banking obselete. It's a new paradigm where monney is no longer controlled by a few, but by the whole network. The shift is already happening, as we speak, even if it's hard to see, especially if you lack the fundamental knowledege of cryptoghraphy, game theory and economics. It's just a matter of time before you realize that Bitcoin is hard money, and for the first time we have a framework to apply austrian economics, without permission. Time to reset the keynesian monopoly game. I don't think people are inherently bad, it's just that in the actual system (which I call the legacy system) people are incentivised to make decisions that are good from their individual perspective, but unfortunately, the sum of those individual decisions are bad from the collective group perspective. That's just plain simple game theory. What makes Bitcoin so special is it's perfectly aligned set of incentives that makes individuals and collectives outcomes better. It switches the economic model from keynesian to austrian, inflation to deflation, spending to saving, modern slavery (throught debt) to financial sovereingty, de-evolution to evolution. We are currently shifting from fiat to Bitcoin. What you think capitalism is has nothing to do with what Capitalism really is in a free market. Capitalism is beautiful, it's simply the act of evolution, saving and optimising for consumming only what's needed (don't forget with live in a world with limited ressources, yes we all forgot). Stop spending and start capitalising, that's what we should be doing. But it's near impossible in a world run by socialists imposing debt using violence. What do you think back the US dollar ? gold ? no no, only tanks, aircraft carriers, soldiers and corrupt politicians. Our only way out of this madness with the minimum violence is Bitcoin. To be clear, if you dont run a fullnode, then you don't validate the transactions yourself (which is one purpose of running a fullnode). If you don't do the job yourself, then you have no other choice then to trust someone else for it. That's not necesserely a bad thing, as long as you are aware of it. You have no say in what defines Bitcoin, you enforce no rules. You serve no purpose in the Bitcoin realm. Why not ! Now if you seek financial sovereignty and want to take part in the new money paradigm, you will need to operate a fullnode and get your hands a little dirty. This guide hopefuly will take you there while walking you through the steps of setting up your autonomous Bitcoin Core full node. Why Bitcoin Core ? simply because the Bitcoin core client implement and enforce the set of rules that I myself define as being Bitcoin.

In my case, for a personnal fullnode, I want to run a full txindexed chain. We only live once and i want all options to be possible/available :) If you plan to interact with the lightning network in the future and want to stay 100% trustless, I encourage you txindexing the chain (because you'll need an indexed chain). it's not hard to txindex the chain later on, but the less you touch the data, the better. so always better to start with txindex=1 if you want to go for the long run. It only adds 26Go on top of the 200Go non indexed chain. So it's worth it ! Just to get an idea of the size of the bitcoin core chain (August 23, 2018) :

Sync the blockchain
There are 2 ways you can donwload/sync the bitcoin blochain :
Network sync (default)
If this is the first time you are setting up a bitcoin full node, it's the only way to trust the data. It will take time, depending on your hardware and network speed, it could vary from hours to days. You have nothing to do but leave the bitcoind daemon running. check status with bitcoin-cli getblockchaininfo, kill daemon with bitcoin-cli stop. Remember that this is the only procedure you should use in order to sync the blockchain for the first time, as you don't want to trust anyone with that data except the network itself.
Skip this chapter if this is the first you're setting up a full node. Once you operate a fully "network trusted" node, if you'd like to operate other nodes, syncing them from your trusted node(s) will go much faster, since you simply have to copy the trusted data from server to server directly, instead of going throught the bitcoin core network sync. You will need to transfer the chainstate & blocks directory from the ~/.bitcoin folder of one of your trusted node to the new one. The way you achieve that transfer is up to you. At the time of writing (August 23, 2018), the txindexed blockchain (chainstate + blocks up to height 538.094) is around 220Go. Moving that quantity of data over the network is not a trivial task, but if the transfer happens between 2 reliable servers, then netcat will be great for the job. (netcat sends raw tcp packets, there is no authentification or resume feature). Note: with netcat, if one of the servers connection is not stable, and you lose connection, you will have to start again. that's a bummer. in that case you are better of with tools like rsync or rcp that let you resume a transfer. In order to make the transfer a simple task, make sure you do the following on both of the receiver and the sender server :
make sure port 7000 is open (or choose whatever port you want, make sure to reflect in .bashrc wrapper fucntions)
Install netcat & pv (pv is a utility that will show transfer progress)
Add 2 wrapper function in your .bashrc :
Reload your bash source ~/.bashrc
Once both your servers (receiver & sender) are netcat ready, proceed as follow :
On the receiver side (the node we are setting up)
Then on the sender side (trusted server)
Go grab a coffee, a spliff or whatever rewards you :)
Repeat ncpull/ncpush for the chainstate folder also.

bitcoind as a service
For ease of use and 100% uptime, simply add bitcoind to your system service manager (in my case systemd) create the file /etc/systemd/system/bitcoind.service and add the following to it :

Don't forget to correct the user name & the bitcoin.conf path. Once the systemd bitcoind config file is created, reload system services and start the bitcoind service:

If everything worked, status should output the following:

The bitcoind service is active and will automatically restart on statup/crash. Wait a couple minutes until the bitcoin-cli getblockchaininfo command returns the chain status. You can also query the rest interface by opening http://nodeIP:8332/rest/chaininfo.json in your browser.
You now have a full Bitcoin core node running on it's own. What's next ? Well I never blogged before, this is the first time I am outsourcing some of my work. I'm a passionnate enginner working on all kind of technologies. We've come a long ways and I'm at a point where I've decided I'm going to really pursue this with everything I've got in terms of energy and devotion. I've got a prior commitment hanging over my head towards the end of this month, but once I resolve that, I'm planning on spending a couple months really digging into NYAN and seeing what I can do. So far we've just chipped away at the edges, but already we've seen some pretty impressive results. Just a brief recap of our successes first and then I'll talk about my ideas. We've gone from 1-3 satoshi to 10-30 satoshi prices. Not bad. We've got two new block explorers up in response to the previous one going down. We've got an irc channel and active community members both here and there. And we've got me, the crazy bastard who's locked up 25% of the available supply and is planning to do everything he can to build up NYAN to its proper greatness, and got tipnyan going and did a major giveaway with it. Oh, and we survived a dump of ~10% of the available supply quite comfortably. Probably other stuff I'm forgetting about right now. So, what next? Well, a lot of stuff. This is just a huge dump of ideas for discussion and inspiration. It's not necessarily ordered, although I'll try to have it go roughly from simplest to most complex. These are by no means promises or guarantees. This is just stuff I think would be cool. Some of this isn't a "implement this", it's more of a blog post prompt or general concept.

Wheel - easy enough; various nyan gambling would be interesting; it does raise some questions which will need to be considered
Updating the client, by first porting the latest Bitcoin release to a generic ScryptCoin implementation (or find a Scrypt-based coin which is up-to-date and suitable; is DOGE still Scrypt or did they switch when they rebased onto Bitcoin?) and then porting that to NYAN, so we have all the latest updates. Document this process. Release new binaries. Document the Windows build process in particular (doesn't seem to be documentation in the bitcoin repo).
NYANshift - shapeshift concept for NYAN. Support NYAN <=> DOGE to start.
Bounties - post some bounties for various important things; Nyancoin graphics / memes are huge here
Mobile apps - wallets for all major platforms is obviously the biggest step here, but additional nyan presence would be good too
Games - we've got a couple; giving them some more love and making more would be good; bots are a concern, but having some way to pay out NYAN for free NYAN games would be cool
Tie-ins with other coins - DOGE is obvious, but there are also a few others (BAT, MEOW, DIME) which I think have a lot of the same advantages of being "almost-dead" coins as NYAN originally did and which make sense to encourage as related coins where people can get a million a lot cheaper to have a place to start.
Bank of NYAN - There are a lot of ideas I have here. Let me just give you one sample: NYAN certificates of deposits with decent interest rates, like 12% annual for a one-year to start out with. Now, how is it possible to pay above market rates on interest like that? Well, risky currencies always have to pay higher rates to attract deposits. But it's also because the interest is paid in NYAN, so I can afford to back an unlimited amount because of the fixed supply given my reserves. That is: I could pay a year's interest on the entire supply of NYAN which I don't control at that rate. And of course, I'm not going to have all (or probably even a majority) of the outstanding NYAN deposited with me. So there are a lot of cool things which can be done with this. Again, some issues this raises to consider (legal/accounting), but I believe this can be dealt with.
Recruit graphic design talent - we've got to get back to the shiny nyancoin memes
.nyan TLD - figure out what it takes to register with ICANN. I was inspired on this by .sucks being registered. It used to be that it was basically "be a country" to get a TLD, but that seems relaxed. coin.nyan, bank.nyan, there are a lot of cool options at that point.
We need a NYAN Council/Foundation/entity legal incorporation somewhere eventually. This raises a lot of questions. I believe I have a very good option for this, which will tie into an identity linking I'm going to do. My next post will talk more about this.
Peer exchange/list - Basically an on-going / automated version of the nyan nodes map, which will make it possible to see addresses to connect to, etc.
Going from 'almost dead' to 'survival inevitable' - this is more of a blog post idea, but this is sort of the phase we're in right now; finishing shoring up the essentials and getting to the point where we can lose anything and keep going
Going from 'survival inevitable' to 'steady growth' - Not necessarily growth purely in price, although that, but in community and tech particularly.
Going from 'steady growth' to 'spiky' - This is when we start to launch: when we're getting new buyers coming in and spiking the price. We don't have perfect stability then, but I'm glad to trade stability for growth.

Buying DOGE to back NYAN - in order to back 1Ɲ >= 1Đ, it's helpful to have a reserve of DOGE ready to buy NYAN. Of course, current market prices don't support 1Ɲ >= 1Đ, but I expect we'll get there again, and I expect DOGE and NYAN to be an increasingly active trade pair.
Using UNO to back NYAN - I'm not exactly sure what exactly this implies apart from making bids in UNO for NYAN. I've got a bunch of UNO (420) and don't necessarily want to keep holding it, so this would be a good use.

This seems like a massive stretch at this point, and it is, but we should build a track record of outperforming all other assets ultimately. That is the highest possible goal. I think it makes sense for NYAN to support a distilled version of the core philosophy originally behind BTC and to hold onto it (like libertarian principles generally).
NYAN as part of a retirement plan - Advocate something like 1% exposure to NYAN as a crazy hedge / lotto. The thing about its massive growth potential is that the 1% can end up doing better than all of the rest of it, and yet losing 1% completely wouldn't be a significant impact.
